CUSTOM-ized

November 03, 2011

Over the past couple of years we have had the distinct pleasure to work with some lovely couples on custom wedding favors. We made small half bars for each of their guests with special wrapping that fit the aesthetic and feel of their weddings. These sorts of projects are always fun and inspiring to us, thank you to the couples for a fantastic custom experience. Many happy returns!

BLITHE & MATT
For Blithe & Matt we made a Rosemary, Thyme and Lavender soap with a cornmeal scrub. In their ceremony, B & M included a passage about herbal lore as a way of talking about family, commitment and love. It was awesome to have our soap align with that detail of their wedding. The soap was wrapped in hand printed vellum with artwork by Devlin Shea and was tied with twine and a little wooden tag that Jeff made. Since the wedding was outdoors in the dead of summer, we also made small bug repellent candles for every table and our organic bug spray was circulated at the reception.

KATIE & JOHN
When Katie and John approached us they knew what scent they wanted because they were already lovers of our Fennel Orange soap. John is also an artist, so he designed the wallpaper-like repeat pattern for the vellum wrapper and the small ribbon-like banner that would be printed on the parchment cigar wrapper. The design included flowers from their respective home states.

JENN & MATT
For this awesome couple we made a drawing that would go with the overall feel of the wedding. They were getting married in a barn with a rustic beauty theme; there would be sunflowers on all of the tables and carried by the bride. We made this drawing of two sunflowers being tied into a knot just for them, and also a print of woodgrain for the under-wrap. They chose to have half of the bars as lavender lemon and half as grapefruit mint.  All of the labels were hand-stamped on parchment paper and hemp PCW paper with soy based printing inks.

LAURA & BROOKES
This was a really fun scent and package to work on. These folks are both food lovers and have super refined and unique palates. We approached the soap like a cocktail and mixed up a cedar, marjoram and peppermint scent with calendula petals. The result was woodsy and fresh with a touch of sweetness. We then made some botanical drawings of wildflowers for the under-wrap and a heart shaped bundle of calendula for the over-wrap. The packaging was hand stamped and wrapped.

In Conversation with My Grandfather

March 23, 2017

It's been 75 years since President Roosevelt enacted the executive order which allowed the U.S. military to exclude any and all persons from an area after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  Although no single racial or ethnic group was mentioned in the order, hundreds of thousands of Japanese-Americans were forced out of their homes and moved into camps.

I recently interviewed my grandfather about what life was like as a Japanese-American post World War II.  I hoped to gain insight into a part of my heritage which I’ll never experience first hand but am saddened by.  It's impossible not to see parallels being drawn between the recent travel ban and past U.S. anti-Asian policies.  I can't help but feel anxiety for how the current administration seems to be playing to the fears of a bigoted populism and what can be done to counter it.

Rosemary

Not just your potato’s best friend, this fresh and woody herb promotes hair growth and stimulates blood circulation. The fragrant oils in the rosemary leaf also dissolve excess and clogging sebum in hair follicles to balance oil production without over-drying. Make your own herbal tea hair rinse with fresh rosemary or apply hair oil with the essential oil.
