How To Host A Clothing Swap

Gathering No. 2 👕 The Clothing Swap 👕

Not to be a total bummer, but…

The average North American throws out 80+ pounds of clothing every year
63% of clothes in the US are made from petrochemicals (plastic)
1.7 million tons of microfibers end up in the ocean every year 😿
The fashion industry created 92 million tons of waste in 2015 alone
85% of old clothes end up in the landfill

You probably have more clothes than you actually need if you really think about it.

Have you had this experience? You’ve traveled somewhere and brought only a few favorite clothing items; you had to make tough choices and really think about what you’d need and use, but then once you were living in these few pieces for that week or two, you felt really… free?

Your old clothes are someone else’s pure gold, and we’re betting you have friends who would like to take a peek inside your closet. Old clothes are the perfect low-waste, zero dollars gift for your loved ones, and if you give them away at a party, you can check everyone off your list in ONE FELL SWOOP. 🦅

What You’ll Need

Old clothes
Hangers (optional)
Paper for labeling
Clothing racks or places to hang things (optional)

Your favorite thrift store. Here’s ours: in a basement-level apartment in a small town, dingy and filled with books and records and that floral print that everyone wore in the seventies. Pick a room and set the mood there, creating sections for different types of items, and labeling them, so your friends will know where to put their stuff. String lights are a must; if you have those oversized colored bulbs—perfect. Records or mixtapes will make you feel nostalgic. Throw down some pillows so people can be comfy on the floor while they’re sorting through old treasures. Mulled wine is nice—just retro enough and the smell of cloves makes it festive. Vegan cookies would be a bonus if you’re feeling extra, and I know that you are!

How To

  1. Gather your old clothes and separate them into categories.
  2. Make paper labels to put in different sections of the room where you’re holding the swap: tops, bottoms, shoes, accessories, and so on.
  3. Make the room as cozy and laid back as humanly possible.
  4. Now, swap!
