The Unexpected (Not Prickly) Power of Prickly Pear Cactus

Prickly pears on a cactus

Put something with the word “prickly” in it on your face? Sounds wrong, but oh, is this right. Prickly pear cactus is nature’s botox, but if botox had skin healing properties. It’s an innovation in natural anti-aging care, prized for its ability to boost collagen production, imbue skin with potent antioxidants, and repair the ever-regenerating skin barrier.

It’s the star ingredient of our new pro-aging (anti-aging, if you must) acid toner for the face. When married with our new Blue Tansy Serum for face and eyes, the results will absolutely astound you.

Benefits of Prickly Pear Cactus for Skin

Anti-Aging
Prickly pear cactus gets its anti-aging superpowers from its antioxidants, including betalains, which are beloved by skin professionals for their ability to stimulate collagen (your body's own ability to make it) and improve skin elasticity. Its fruit pulp also yields a polyhydroxy acid that gently increases cellular renewal, sloughing away dead skin and surface buildup without irritation, making it suitable for even the most sensitive skin. Elastic, collagen-rich, regularly renewed skin is able to rebound quickly and does not show signs of aging.

Brightening
You can thank the bounty of vitamins E and K in prickly pear cactus for its brightening powers. It’s an amazing, natural brightener for the notoriously hard-to-brighten undereye area, too.

Barrier Repair
The deep hydration and linoleic acid of prickly pear cactus give it unparalleled barrier repair ability. A strong skin barrier is essential for skin that appears more youthful. It rejects pollutants and rebounds quickly from irritation.

How We Get Prickly Pear Cactus Oil

Prickly pear cactus in skin care comes from either the fruit or the seeds. The seeds are cold-pressed to make a potent oil that can be mixed into skin care products. Where the pulp is used, the fruit is removed from the seeds and then formed. Our new Cactus Tansy Face Exfoliator uses the fruit pulp to create a polyhydroxy acid (PHA), a gentler alternative to traditional alpha and beta hydroxy acids that removes dead skin cells and surface buildup without irritation, making it great for all skin types.

How to Use Cactus Tansy Acid Exfoliant

After cleaning, apply the acid toner in an even layer over face, allow to dry slightly. Follow with a toner of your choice and/or the Tansy Myrrh Eye + Face Serum while the toner is still damp. Follow with sunscreen and makeup, if you use it. Use morning and night for optimal results.
