Low Waste Hair Care Primer

our hair bars and powders stacked in varying levels with slabs of marble and a cantaloupe. the background is peach and the ground is pink.

From Bars to Powders

If shampoo bottles were this benign and plastic free... we wouldn’t think twice about reaching for them over and over. But plastic is a mega (that is, 380-million tons per year) problem, and it’s one of the reasons we developed our solid hair care and concentrated powders. With both of our hair options—bars and powders—we’re able to eliminate plastic waste without compromising care for your mane squeeze.

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER BARS

Meet the old hat, the steady, the bars that have been in our line for some time. They look like bars of hand soap, and you could definitely use them for your hands (s/o #MultipurposeMeowMeowTweet) but, abracadabra! They are shampoo, they are conditioner, they are personal care and low-waste grace.

What Are Solid Shampoo & Conditioner Bars?

Solid shampoos and solid conditioners are concentrated hair care in a solid bar form. Instead of shipping you water, in the shower, you add the water. The bar is only the good stuff—plant oils and extracts formulated to support your hair and scalp.

Solid hair care may take some getting used to when you’re transitioning to a low-waste hair routine, especially if you have super long or thick hair, but once you get the hang of it, it’s very simple.

What Do Our Solid Shampoo & Conditioner Bars Do?

Rosemary Avocado Shampoo Bar

BENEFITS: Rich avocado oil and aloe vera condition and soften hair. Hops flowers and rosemary promote scalp health and shiny, lustrous hair.
HAIR TYPE: Good for all types, but especially good for curly, dry and natural hair. It’s color safe, but we recommend washing color-treated hair less.
MULTIPURPOSE: Use it on your body, too. If you’re traveling—just pack one bar. It can also be used to wash your dog and as a beard wash.
TROUBLESHOOTING: If you have hard water, you might notice a buildup from using bar shampoo or conditioner. To wash away residue and demineralize, use our powder shampoo.

Lavender Coconut Milk Shampoo Bar

BENEFITS: Moisturizing shea butter and coconut milk condition and soften, and leave hair shiny. Lavender and ylang ylang strengthen hair and calm itchy scalp.

Conditioner Bar

BENEFITS: Omega-rich plant oils and stimulating lavender nourish scalp and locks. Cocoa butter, jojoba oil, and shea butter smooth hair and add shine. This conditioner uses a palm-free rinsing agent that we formulated ourselves to avoid the palm oil–based agent found in most conditioners.
HAIR TYPE: Good for all types, but especially good for curly, dry and natural hair. And yes, it’s color safe!
MULTIPURPOSE: Use it as a co-wash (no shampoo, only conditioner) or a leave-in conditioner. Use it for shaving legs.
TROUBLESHOOTING: If it seems like the conditioner isn't rubbing off on your hair, make sure that your hair is really wet. The idea is that you are adding water to create a lotion... on your hair.

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER POWDER

Our powdered concentrates were designed to mimic the experience of gel shampoo & conditioners. They activate in the palm of your hand to give you that lotion-y bottle experience (without the bottle), and are an easier low-waste transition for some than going from bottle to bars.

They are also multipurpose. The shampoo doubles as a hard water rinse, and the conditioner moonlights as a leave-in hair mask.

What Is Shampoo & Conditioner Powder Concentrate?

It’s pretty straightforward—our powder concentrates pack all the good stuff that you want for shiny, clean locks into a little aluminum recyclable bottle. Just like our bar hair care, these pretty pow(d)erful bottles are missing only one ingredient. Water. But you don’t need us to ship you water. You can mix it up yourself in the palm of your hand.

The powders are very easy to use and they lather up to give you that lotion-like shampoo feeling, and that slippy-slidey conditioner experience.

What Do Our Powder Shampoo & Conditioner Do?

Rose Geranium Shampoo Powder

BENEFITS: Made with a coconut-based cleanser that cleans hair, while also clarifying hard water buildup. Rose geranium, juniper and lavender balance the scalp and stimulate hair growth.
HAIR TYPE: Good for all types, but especially good for fine and oily hair. It’s color safe, but we recommend washing color-treated hair less.
MULTIPURPOSE: The shampoo powder can be used in tandem with our shampoo bars as a weekly clarifying and demineralizing hair mask if you have hard water. Use it as your everyday shampoo, or use it occasionally to de-gunk and refresh locks.
TROUBLESHOOTING: Keep water out of the container. The lather doesn't have to be perfect in your hands. When you add it to your soaked hair, you'll be adding more water to the formula and the texture will get better and better.

Rose Geranium Conditioner Powder

BENEFITS: Made with softening aloe, olive oil and marshmallow to moisturize and detangle locks. The essential oils blend of rose geranium, lavender and juniper promote scalp circulation and health.
HAIR TYPE: Good for all types, but especially good for fine and oily hair. It’s color safe, but we recommend conditioning color-treated hair less.
MULTIPURPOSE: The conditioner powder can also be used as a softening hair mask. For added moisture, put a few drops of your face oil, body oil or favorite oil into the mix and leave it in for a few minutes before rinsing
TROUBLESHOOTING: Keep water out of the container. The lather doesn't have to be perfect in your hands. When you add it to your soaked hair, you'll be adding more water to the formula and the texture will get better and better.

So, go forth and lather—plastic free.
